About
Fairlington
Long
acknowledged as a charming and desirable place to live, the community
of Fairlington has beenincreasingly recognized for its historic
merit. A history of our community, Fairlington at 50 by Catherine
D. Fellows, traces the history of the land from its earliest colonial
days to the present, providing photographs and first-hand accounts
of its development.
The Townhouses
and apartments that now comprise Fairlington were originally constructed
between 1942 and 1945, by the federal government's Defense Homes.
The units were later sold to private interests and leased as rental
property. In the early 1970's, the property was converted to condominium
housing, with North Fairlington being the last community converted
and sold as condominiums in 1976.
Even the names
of our Townhouse and apartment models
were selected to reflect both the community's rich Virginia heritage
and the condominium's Bicentennial opening: Bradford, Clarendon,
Dominion, Fairfax, Georgetown, Hermitage, Monticello, Mount Vernon,
Richmond, Sherwood and Staunton.
Following
a long-term cooperative effort among the seven condominium communities
comprising North and South Fairlington, we were recently became
a historic district. In December 1998, the Commonwealth of Virginia
added Fairlington to the Virginia Landmarks Register. In March
1999, the Federal Government selected Fairlington for the National
register for Historic Places.
